When a family has been successful in having a child
through In Vitro Fertilization, there are often remaining embryos that
were not used. These embryos are frozen and stored. Questions remain for
the families who are no longer planning to use the embryos to build
their family, but struggle with what to do with the frozen embryos.
The
Snowflakes Embryo Adoption Program allows couples who have
frozen embryos in storage to agree to release the embryos for transfer
to an adoptive couple. The transfer of the embryos into the womb of the
adoptive mother takes place with the intent that she and her husband may
carry the child, give birth to the child, and be that child's parents.
The genetic family relinquishes the embryos for adoption and
implantation in the adoptive mother.
For families who long to be parents, and
have been unable to conceive, embryo adoption may be an answer.
Prospective adoptive moms must be physically able to carry a child to
term as determined by her physician. Couples who are unable to become
parents through the traditional IVF treatments may find themselves
candidates for embryo adoption.
